Southbank Football Club | State Bank Club | Commonwealth Bank Club
SOUTHBANK Amateur Football Club evolved from the State Savings Bank and then Commonwealth Bank. (Southbank, State Bank records refer below) Both banks fielded teams in the VAFA for many decades until 1990 when they combined to become State Commonwealth Bank. In 1994 the club changed its name to Southbank (refer below). In 1999 Southbank Amateur Football Club merged with Prahran to become Prahran Amateur Football Club . From 2011 to 2022 the club traded Prahran Assumption Football Club after forming a partnership with Assumption College. The club now trades under the name Prahran Football Club, (PFC) but its registered name with the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA) remains Southbank Amateur Football Club. (Just as Footscray trades under the name Western Bulldogs in the AFL). Many past State and Southbank players are now player award sponsors at PFC in 2023 and are listed below.
STATE BANK 1927-1990 State Bank competed in the VAFA, sponsoring the club. In 1990 merged with Commonwealth Bank to become State Commonwealth Bank. COMMONWEALTH BANK 1947-1994 Commonwealth Bank competed in the VAFA. In 1990, merged with State Bank to become State Commonwealth Bank. SOUTHBANK 1994-1998 In 1994 the club changed its name from State Commonwealth Bank to Southbank Football Club as the Commonwealth Bank stopped providing sponsorship dollars. We felt that the name Southbank not only represented our geographical location it also reflected our "Bank" history. Prahran (VFA) went into recess at the end of 1994. About half a dozen players and half a dozen committee/supporters came across to Southbank FC for the 1995 season.
1995 In 1995 we moved from Albert Park to one of the grounds beside Rod Laver Arena in Swan St due to the impending Grand Prix works at Albert Park. 1997 Coached by current Collingwood recruiting guru Derek Hine, the club had an outstanding year in 1997 winning the senior premiership without losing a game (Premiers & Champions) and the reserves also winning the flag (but lost their only game for the year in the 2nd semi final). Seniors defeated St Pats/Mentone and the reserves defeated Oakleigh.
1998 In 1998 the seniors lost the D grade grand final to Whitefriars but earnt promotion to C grade. At the end of 1998 Southbank were forced to re-locate away from the Swan St ground as works commenced on building what is now Hisense Arena. Prahran FC had traded its way out of debt and was keen to establish a team again. The basic situation was that Prahran could get a ground (Toorak Park) but had no team and Southbank had a team but no ground. It was agreed that Southbank would merge with Prahran FC to become Prahran Amateur Football Club for the 1999 season. (History by Neil Wallmeyer) SOUTHBANK HONOUR BOARD 1994-1998
