Two Blues Tardy Start Costly
Seniors:
Conceding six goals starts is inviting trouble as Prahran Assumption can vouch for after a frustrating three point defeat at Toorak Park on Saturday.
The opening 20 minutes was a nightmare for the Two Blues who lacked intent, conceded a string of free kicks not to mention the first four goals of the match. Worse was to come in the second quarter when Oakleigh extended its lead to 38 points. The Krushers had come to play and for whatever reason the Two Blues were a shadow of the team striving for a finals berth. The third quarter saw a total transformation. Four goals to Jack Matherson and two from fellow key forward Brent Chapman narrowed the gap to six points. A goal to Nathan Costin early in the last quarter gave the Two Blues the lead for the first time in the match, then came the frustration. With Oakleigh visibly tiring twice Bryce Heeps missed from set shots inside 40m, then his shot on the run from the boundary line was cruelly touched on the line. Oakleigh regained its poise for one last charge which yielded two goals. As the siren sounded Matherson duly converted his fifth goal for the match to narrow the margin to three points.
Tellingly the Two Blues had few four quarter players with Brett Dickinson dominant in ruck a stand out. It was a disappointing day for all including wingman Beau Adams on the occasion of his 100th senior game.
