Two Blues Reality Check
Seniors:
Prahran Assumption received a rude reality check against a rampant Old Geelong at Como Park on Saturday.
Competitive in the first half, the Two Blues fell away badly conceding 13 second half goals to a solitary major from Jordan Waters late in the final quarter.
The final scoreline of 22-11 (143) to 5-11 (41) was an accurate reflection of the gulf in class between the teams.
Simply Old Geelong was too tall, too quick and too skilful for the young Two Blues and its accurate kicking for goal despite a swirling northerly wind blowing was impressive.
Cal Wood, a regular source of frustration for Two Blues supporters, was the stand out forward for Old Geelong with six goals.
The match began optimistically for the Two Blues when Matt Wall snapped the first goal of the match.
Even deep into the second quarter this was a genuine contest with goals from Joe Slattery and Jamie Robbins narrowing the gap to 11 points mid-way through the second quarter.
But the Two Blues resistance was sapped by a 6-2 to one point third quarter.
More pain came in the final quarter with a further five unanswered goals before Waters’ goal.
The Two Blues won their fair share of the ball but was bereft of tall forward options as time after time Old Geelong swept the ball downfield with ease.
Prahran Assumption had some consistent contributors notably Tom Keaney who battled manfully in the ruck , Harry and Josh Taylor who won plenty of possessions, Blayne Dempsey showed his customary poise in defence against overwhelming odds while Jayden Williams showed in the last quarter he has a bright future.
For Nathan Costin it was disappointing day to cap his 100th senior game but the feat to reach triple figures is a credit to his perseverance over many years.
Next Saturday the Two Blues face a supreme challenge when they host unbeaten Old Mentonians at Toorak Park.
The ladder leader has demolished all four teams it has met this season with its smallest winning margin 110 points.!
