Two Blues Post First Season Win

Seniors: 

Prahran Assumption posted four precious premiership points in a timely first win for the season in VAFA Division 1 v Oakleigh at Scammel Reserve on Saturday.

Make no mistake this was a crucial round three clash for last year’s Division 2 Premier after heavy losses to ladder leaders Ormond and Hampton Rovers. Missing 11 of last year’s flag winning team the undermanned Two Blues were in dire need of a win to keep belief in a team long on effort but short on conversion. The first quarter was more of the same with a rash of turnovers by both teams. The Two Blues constantly pumped the ball forward only to see it springboarded back. Second quarter goals to Jack Matherson (2) and James Falcone gave the Two Blues a slender 13 point lead. Gradually the superior pace of the Two Blues took its toll on Oakleigh and their slick handball-running game took effect as the clangers reduced and confidence rose. Coach Ash Mills asked for five last quarter goals to ice the game and they duly delivered. Riley Conlan, tasked in the first, and only, ruckman role in just his third senior match was tireless and flourished and Matherson and Will Brereton became aerial threats up forward. Tom Freeman and Harry Taylor were as industrious as ever while Beau Adams laid tackle after tackle to set the standard for commitment. In defence Joel Hume was effective against top full-forward Aaron Cloke whose inaccuracy proved costly for the home team.

The women’s team was defeated for the first time by ladder leader Williamstown YCW.
