Two Blues reel from KO blow

THIS was billed as a heavyweight clash- UHS-VU first v Prahran second in VAFA Division 1.

Instead, what we saw was a total mismatch, the Two Blues plummeting to one of their heaviest defeats in recent years , a 65 point trouncing by undefeated ladder leader UHS-VU.

On what should have been a glorious celebration of full-back Jayden Williams 100th senior match, the Two Blues were pummelled.

With just one goal to half-time and trailing by 36 points, the Two Blues were down for the count.

The knock out blow was delivered as UHS-VU piled on nine second half goals.

The result is the Two Blues slumped from second to fourth on the ladder and a rude awakening.

The Two Blues forward line was non existent with several gettable misses in the first quarter kicking to the scoring end costly. As their confidence eroded the hosts ramped up the pressure and the Two Blues defence, so reliable in the first five rounds, caved in under an avalanche of inside 50s conceding 16 goals.

By three quarter time Prahran had cobbled a mere two goals, from Max Milward and Joe Bell.

Rory Brodie, Jon Simonetta and Shaun Chapman on the siren added three consolation goals in the last term. The 16-7 (103) to 5-8 (38) is an ugly scoreline.

Post match coach Craige Milward was searching for answers.

Embarrassing was a word bandied about and rightly so.

Surely there is not an 11 goal gap between these teams.

The evidence from the first six rounds is that when the Two Blues can dominate and free wheel they look a quality outfit.

But when challenged old habits return to the surface, such as ill discipline.

Turnovers and free kicks for poorly executed tackles is one thing, but a rash of 50 metres penalties is self destruction.

Until the Two Blues win against one of the better teams there will be a question mark on their mental toughness.
