Two Blues Gallant in Final Round Defeat
Seniors:
Prahran Assumption’s 2015 season ended with a sense of dignity in defeat by VAFA Division 1 ladder leader Ormond on Saturday.
The Two Blues faced the daunting task of taking on the hot premiership favourite with a below strength list on enemy territory at Gunn Reserve.
But such was the Two Blues resolve the result was in the balance mid-way through the third quarter when the visitors took the lead thanks to a superb set shot goal from deep in the pocket by Jamie Robbins.
But Ormond quickly asserted its authority with three quick goals to take control.
Even in the last quarter kicking to the scoring end Ormond 16-8 (104) was unable to take total control with the Two Blues 12-11 (83) restricting the margin to 21 points.
The trend of the game was set in the opening quarter.
Scores were level at quarter time with Ged Hogarth slotting all three goals from leading marks.
Ormond then took control with the first four goals of the second term and a blow out threatened,
But the Two Blues were not to be denied and goals to Jon Rice and Hogarth in time-on trimmed the margin to 12 points.
For the Two Blues defender Tim Webb was outstanding taking the honours over Ormond key playmaker Rob Chisholm, while classy on baller James Musster, especially in the last three quarters, showed why he was named in the Division 1 team of the season. Dependable Paul Donahoo and Dan Anglin were as productive as usual while Hogarth with six goals was the dominant forward on the ground.
The Two Blues seniors finished the season sixth, a disappointing return yet the Two Blues were competitive in every match in the season under Luke Egan and for the last 10 rounds his replacement "Ace" McMahon.
Meanwhile the Reserves will start their finals campaign in the first semi-final v St Mary’s Salesian on Sunday at a venue to be announced.
Despite a last round trouncing by ladder leader Ormond the Two Blues will field a much stronger team next weekend in a bid to defend their premiership crown.
