Two Blues find some solace

DEFEAT is never palatable but sometimes out of a loss some solace can be found.

While Prahran lost its ninth successive match of the VAFA Premier C season on Saturday the 13-4 (82) to 15-15 (105) scoreline gave promise of better times to come.

The Two Blues have been hammered by injuries this season which has paved the way for some unlikely senior debuts with two cases in point on Saturday when Peter Ahern and Thomas Crepin were promoted.

Both were uplifting stories in different ways.

Ahern, from Adelaide club Broadview, with two goals and a lively display at half-forward was the Two Blues best player while Crepin is a Frenchman, a player from a local French Australian Rules competition in his first season in Australia playing our code.

At times the Two Blues played some compelling football, with coach Craige Milward declaring it was some of their best team play of the year.

For the first time in several weeks the Two Blues were in winnable positions at half-time and three quarter-time.

But on both occasions the Two Blues failed in some key moments.

After a rousing second quarter of 5-2, with Noah Hura dominant kicking three goals and Ahern especially damaging across half-forward the Two Blues trailed by just two points at half-time.

They held their own against the breeze and when Jon Stefanutti marked and goaled from 30m out the Two Blues trailed by 10 points with less than 30 seconds of the third term remaining.

Alas it was time for Mazenod to goal as the siren sounded.

Kicking with the aid of a northerly breeze in the last term the Two Blues were still in with a shout.

But when the visitors quickly kicked the first two goals of the last quarter it was game over.

While the effort was commendable considering the talent on the sidelines the fact Mazenod racked up 30 scoring shots was concerning.
