Two Blues Finals Charge Ends
Seniors:
Prahran Assumptions late finals charge came to an end at Como Oval against neighbour, finals bound Old Geelong on Saturday
Following a return to form with a hat-trick of wins and still a mathematical chance of playing finals, the Two Blues headed to Como to regain the Jon Anderson Cup.
The Two Blues were first out of the blocks with the first two goals from Matthew Shaw and John Robbins
Three late goals to Old Geelong gave the home side a four point lead despite a spirited effort by the Two Blues to extend their winning sequence to four.
But seven unanswered goals by Old Geelong in the 'premiership quarter' showed why it's a premiership contender, running out 46 point victors.
Forced to make several changes to the winning formula of recent weeks, the Two Blues opened with a determined attack on the ball.
Old Geelong responded to the Two Blues fast start with three goals before Shaw intercepted a kick in to goal.
On the siren Rick Ellis goaled from 40m to give the visitors a one point lead and maintained the belief of victory.
The second stanza began with a third goal to Shaw and after repeated 50m entries Robbins snapped a goal to give the Two Blues a 13 point lead.
The failure to convert the Two Blues forward 50m entries hurt when Old Geelong added three 'red time' goals to take a four point half-time lead.
Then the third quarter onslaught by Old Geelong effectively sealed the game.
Matthew Pell took it upon himself to stop the rot and twice goaled from outside the 50m arc.
At lemon time Old Geelong held a match winning 42 point lead.
The final quarter began with Prahran Assumption's best passage of play for the day.
With Harrison Taylor running off half back and linking up with Pell, then delivering to Nathan Costin who took a towering mark and goaled from 40m.
However Old Geelong again responded and only late goals to Ellis trimmed the margin to 46 points.
