Two Blues Brave but Kew Too Classy

Seniors:

Class proved the telling factor at Toorak Park on Saturday when Kew showed why it is top of the ladder in VAFA Division 1. The Two Blues were brave all day but conceding the first three goals of the match proved telling. Try as they might the Two Blues simply could not bridge that three goal buffer. In general play the Two Blues matched Kew but the visitors slicker skills were evident. The 44 point margin was unkind to the Two Blues who now slip to eighth on the ladder. Callum Wilson with four goals was again the dominant forward on the ground but lacked support. In defence the Two Blues were superbly led by Luke Kerr and until he was injured early in the third quarter Tom Quinn.

First quarter: Kew kicked the first three goals inside 10 minutes as the Two Blues defence was under siege. Wilson snapped a goal late in the quarter quickly followed by a mark in the goal square and goal by Harrison Taylor.

Second quarter: Joel Hume found Wilson for a mark and long goal as the Two Blues threatened but Kew quickly replied. The Two Blues could not convert its chances while Kew added two more goals.

Thied quarter: The Two Blues came out with renewed intent. When Alex Simpson found Brent Chapman for the first goal of the term it seemed it was ‘game on’. Then a Tim Maya snap hit the post to halt the momentum. Against the run of play Kew goaled . Chapman and Wilson goaled to keep hopes flickering before a bewildering umpire decision to award a free kick to Kew for a deliberate rushed behind in heavy traffic in the goal square.

Fourth quarter: Kew iced the game with the first two goals before another umpiring ‘howler ‘ when a Kew defender missed a teammate with a pass that went through the Prahran Assumption goals. The umpire ruled it a deliberate point and Harrison Taylor was awarded a gift goal. A great solo goal by Riley Hogan was the highlight of an otherwise lacklustre final term.
