Tim's Tips for Sir John Monash Stakes Day

TIM HABEL was a racing journalist with the Sun, then Herald-Sun for 36 years and now works as a contributor for The Age. His selections are published mid-week and each Saturday.

CAULFIELD Saturday, July 10, 2026, rail 6m, track soft 7

RACE 1: ANGELS FURY 1, Portnari 2, Egyptian Dancer 3, Eilish 4

RACE 2: MARKDEL 1, Zouper Fund 2, Luna Cat 3, Stealth Of Night 4

RACE 3: DAVIDA 1, Cruiserweight 2, Like A Drifter 3, Undisputable 4

RACE 4:  SIGNATURE SCENT 1, Lady Verity 2 Cavalry Girl 3, Wintery 4

RACE 5: SIR ATLAS 1, Belle Savoir 2, Amleto 3, Prince Eric 4

RACE 6: DIRNASEER 1, Decalogue 2, Paddypie 3, Our Chief 4

Dirnaseer has been running on in 1600 races, extra 400m and senior rider on. Stablemate Paddypie should also appreciate the 2000m. Decalogue has won three in a row and with the claim again has to rate highly.

RACE 7: RECOMMENDATION 1, Winnasedge 2, Watchme Win 3 Bazaball Rewarded 4

Recommendation and Winnasedge both have great Caulfield records and can fight this out. Recommendation won this race in 2024 and ran third last year. Going as well as ever judging by his last start Flemington second. Winnasedge is a last start winner here.

RACE 8: TEN COMMANDMENTS 1, Coeur Volante 2, Big Swinger 3, Rise At Dawn 4

Ten Commandments has been a revelation since joining the Maher stable. He's a superior wet tracker in fact all eight wins are on slow or heavy ground. This is a class rise but he carries the lightest weight of his career and has been winning with ease.

RACE 9: FEARLESS FREDDY 1, First Chorus 2, Makdane 3, Snoopy Now 4

Fearless Freddy was a forgive run last start at Flemington as he had an internal bleed. Former UK galloper, he caught the eye coming from last to just miss at Murray Bridge at his previous run. First Chorus was good coming from a wide draw here last time, several other hopes.
