Tim's tips for Flemington Cup Day

TIM HABEL was a racing journalist with the Sun, then Herald-Sun for 36 years and now works as a contributor for The Age. His selections are published mid-week and each Saturday.

FLEMINGTON Saturday, July 17, 2026, rail 3m, track soft 7

RACE 1: NOTIFIED 1, Ko Phangan 2, Delahra 3, Achy Breaky Night 4

RACE 2: HARD KICK 1, Riverina Lulu 2, Panchenko 3, The Troubleshooter 4

RACE 3: CHANGING COLOURS 1, Madiyya 2, Barbie's Dreamworld 3, Lake Vostok 4

RACE 4: DAVIDA 1, Missapprehend 2, Laura Eliza 3, Off Their Perch 4

RACE 5: FLYING KHAN 1, Mr Avery 2, The Mean Fiddler 3, Flying Done 4

RACE 6: BOLD SOUL 1, Highland Blaze 2, Black Run 3, Samuel Langhorne 4

Bold Soul loves Flemington and with a 3kg weight turnaround can reverse last start defeat by Highland Blaze. Sydney visitor Black Run has twice won over 2400m at Caulfield so races well on left hand tracks.

RACE 7: BARARI 1, Great Maximus 2, Home Rule 3, Moby Dick 4

Barari should have finished closer against his own age last time in the listed Creswick. Down in weight and although this open class he'll turn four next month. Great Maximus continues to race well without winning, Home Rule resumes and has trialled well while Moby Dick is a proven straight tracker.

RACE 8: SAINT GEORGE 1, Glory Daze 2, Banker's Choice 3, Nellie Leylax 4

Ciaron Maher stablemates can fight this out. Saint George was sound first-up at 1600m and is a track and distance winner in January while Glory Daze is a last start 2000m McKell Cup winner in Sydney.

RACE 9: STREET ARTIST 1, Prima Bella 2, One Hard Lady 3, Next Step Iowa 4

Street Artist is testing the faith of its supporters but has found the right race and addition of blinkers might do the trick. Sydney raider Prima Bella loves soft ground and is racing well.
