Tim's Tips for Australian Guineas Day

TIM HABEL was a racing journalist with the Sun, then Herald-Sun for 36 years and now works as a contributor for The Age. His selections are published mid-week and each Saturday.

FLEMINGTON  FEBRUARY 28, 2026, rail 2m, track good 4

RACE 1: JACARANDA 1, Gi Twist 2, La Gitana 3, Ladhar 4

RACE 2: RUE DE ROYALE 1, Dirty Grin 2, Behaviour 3, Legacy Bay 4

RACE 3:  WATERSPORTS 1, Red Galaxy 2, Great Maximus 3, Little Jack 4

RACE 4:  ASTRAL FAME 1, Sneaky Sunrise 2, Ahha Ahha 3, Mometz 4

RACE 5: McGAW 1, Celui 2, Bridal Waltz 3, Midwest 4

RACE 6: BEL MERCI 1, Educated 2, Wintery 3, Befuddle 4

 RACE 7: BIRDMAN 1, Air Assault 2, Apulia 3, Enxuto 4

Birdman was held up at a crucial time and just missed in a blanket finish resuming in similar grade. The extra 200m suits. Air Assault draws in and likely to settle in front and take running down, Perth Cup winner Apulia has been freshened, has good first-up stats.

RACE 8: OBSERVER 1, Planet Red 2. Sixties 3, Express Class 4

Gun colt Observer has the gift of being able to race on pace, then quicken. Which means his main rivals Planet Red and Sixties will be conceding him an almost impossible start.

RACE 9: ALPHA SOFIE 1, Nashville Jack 2, Teine Aulelei 3, Trapper John 4

But for the vagaries of the straight Alpha Sofie would be a clear cut top pick, that's the unknown. Same goes for NSW visitor Nashville Jack who comes off a top run on Magic Millions day, first upper Teine Auleilei has a big finish and could be the blow out runner.

RACE 10: FIORENOT 1, Ambassadorial 2, Xtra Rush 3, Georgie Get Mad 4

Fiorenot is a model of consistency. Just missed last start here and drops 2.5kg. Had plenty of racing of late but if he hold his form is the one to beat with Ambassadorial the logical danger. Xtra Rush remains undefeated and toppled Smart Choice last time which has since win a Group 2.

BEST BETS: Observer, Fiorenot. VALUE: Astral Flame.
