Frustration for Two Blues but Women Win Again

Seniors:

Goals win football matches, effort alone is not enough as Prahran Assumption can testify to after hosting Hampton Rovers in VAFA Division 1 at Toorak Park on Saturday.

In general play and forward 50 entries the Two Blues matched Hampton Rovers, relegated from C Grade last season but were bereft of scoring power. Certainly the effort was better than in round 1 v Ormond when the Two Blues were never in the game, which made the multiple forward entry turnovers on Saturday all the more frustrating. A scoreless first quarter was typical of the match, the Two Blues repeatedly bombing the ball into the forward zone only to see it rebounded just as quickly with Will Brereton the lone focus with some brilliant high marking despite the slippery conditions. Second quarter goals to John Panagiataros and Beau Adams narrowed the margin to just nine points at half-time. But five unanswered goals from the visitors in the third quarter iced the game. Best and fairest Tom Freeman was back to his best but in general the Two Blues simply lacked poise when it mattered. Earlier the Two Blues unfurled their 2017 Division 2 senior and reserve premiership flags but they have found the going tough in Division 1 and journey to Oakleigh next Saturday in search of their first win. Meanwhile Prahran Assumption’s first women’s team is the only undefeated team in Division 3 following a nine point win over St Leo’s Emmaus.
