Newsletter 19 - August 25, 2023

AS we return to a finals series for the first time since 2017, we thank all members, supporters, sponsors, parents and partners for their support and invite them to a buffet style luncheon at no charge from midday Saturday at DW Lucas Reserve.

TWO BLUES PREPARE FOR FINALS ASSAULT

FINALS for the first time since 2017 are now locked in for Prahran so the preparation for September action starts in Saturday’s final VAFA round of the home and away season.

Playing bottom of the ladder Ivanhoe, there may be a temptation to ‘flirt with form’ but that can be fraught with danger.

When Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge was interviewed pre game last Sunday before taking on cellar dweller West Coast, he said he was going into the match with ‘some trepidation’ which bemused some.

What he was alluding to was the fact West Coast had lost by 100 plus points the previous week so would his players attitude be: ‘this will be a walk in the park.’

Indeed that is what happened - a banana skin is always lurking when teams are not mentally switched on.

Ivanhoe has won just two matches for the season and this is the Hoe’s last VAFA game after 90 years in the competition (before moving to the Northern League) so we can expect pride in their performance.

Two Blues supporters will have one eye on scores from the clash of top two teams Glen Eira v Oakleigh. A Prahran win and Oakleigh loss would put the Two Blues in second place and so the double chance.

Last Saturday’s away win v Therry Penola was on the podium for best win of the season.

To trail by 20 points in enemy territory at three quarter-time against a team playing for a finals berth yet deliver an 8-2 to 0-2 last term for a 28 point win was a nod to the players belief and ability, and a positive for the high pressure stakes of finals.

UNDER 18 BOYS

A
perfect winter’s day for the final round before finals and to celebrate 100 games milestones of Hunter Holmes, Samu Bayley and Charles Terry.

Pre game we were joined by their parents Lee Holmes, Simon Terry and Simon Bayley who touched on the boys footy journey to date - a special initiative this year that has carried on from the senior club.

This was a challenging game from the first bounce with only a one point margin at quarter-time.

Our defence held strong in the second quarter led by Harry Williams at centre half-back and captain Jake Mcfee set up our goals and kicked one of his own.

A slow start to the third term saw Waverley kick two quick goals and at three quarter-time the margin was just two points.

A revamp of the team at the last break saw a new set of mids take control with Marcus Middendorp, Patrick Murray and Samu Bayley driving the boys forward with gut running and winning contested ball.

The whole team lifted to a new level and showed their fitness in the final quarter, in the end winning by 32 points.

Both the 18 boys and girls kick off their final series this Sunday with the boys playing in a qualifying final at 1 pm Sunday at Columbia Park.

UNDER 18 GIRLS

In what was a high stakes game for the Two-Blues, East Malvern emerged victorious, putting an end to their three-game losing streak against Prahran.
East Malvern made the most of their forward 50 entries, scoring the first goal of the game and taking a 7-point lead heading into the quarter time break.
Prahran responded in the second, with a fantastic mark from wing-woman Natsai Kanhutu 30 metres out from goal. Conversion was never out of the question, with Natsai confidently sending the Sherrin right through the centre of the sticks.
Prahran continued to have multiple scoring opportunities in the third and final quarters but couldn’t capitalise. East Malvern ran out as the eventual winners, with 9 scoring shots to Prahran’s 8.
Other results over the weekend ensured that Prahran has secured the double chance finals draw and will face ladder leaders, Beaumaris this weekend. The winner, will head straight into the grand final on 10 September. With some players due to return from injury this week, the Two-Blues are ready to make a statement!

KNOW YOUR SPONSORS

Grill'd | Local Matters

CHAPEL Street is in the heart of Prahran so it fitting that one of the club’s most loyal support sponsors has been Grill’d Windsor.

During the season the VAFA announced a partnership with Grill’d but the Two Blues have enjoyed the support of the 157 Chapel St restaurant for more than a decade in the form of best player award vouchers and their monthly community jar.

Grill’d is committed to their local community which is why in June, they gave back in a big way.
For the entire month, every one of their Local Matters jars across the country were dedicated to the same three groups who support the homeless: the Australian Red Cross, Vinnies, and The Salvation Army aimed to raise about $75,000.

Grill’d’ healthy burgers feature grass fed beef and lamb and have zero preservatives.
